SUNDAY READINGS ~ Worship 933

First Reading ~ Wisdom 9: 13-18

Second Reading ~ Philemon 9-10, 12-17

Gospel ~ Luke 14: 25-33

God’s way in the world is the way of the cross.  Jesus says it today with inescapable clarity: “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.”  Going this way with Jesus demands that we reassess all our relationships and reorder all our priorities.  Something of the sort is being asked of Philemon in today’s second reading.  The slave Onesimus, who Paul implies may not always have lived up to his name (which means “useful”), has run away from the household of Philemon and found refuge with Paul who is in prison.  Paul sends Onesimus back to his master, as the law required, but only after he has baptized Onesimus, making him no longer Philemon’s slave but his brother “in the Lord.”

The twists and turns of the way of the cross, the way of Christ, make it a treacherous path to follow.  That’s why Jesus’ parables today urge us to consider well and calculate costs before setting out.  It is not human wisdom, but the wisdom of the “holy spirit from on high,” that can guide us and make straight the difficult way we must walk.
